what is a postmodernist film and what does it have?

a postmodernist film may include or involve any of these:

it may challenge typical genre conventions. this might mean it does the exact opposite (e.g damsel in distress saves hero) of genre conventions, or it could mean the film is a mix of genres (like a romance, sci-fi and comedy) in one. the lego movie, challenges typical genre conventions as the main character/hero, Emmet, is a quite normal, plain, follow-the-rules character, which isn't typically a personality for a main character. the lego movie is also a mix of genres: slight romance, adventure, action, live-action etc.

it may be a pastiche. this means it may imitate another text or it could have a humorous take on society or culture in the real world. an example of this in the lego movie is how it imitates the matrix, and it jokes about overly-expensive coffee and repetitive tv shows that occur in the real world.

or finally, it could involve hyper-reality. this makes the audience aware that they are watching a movie. this can be created by talking to the camera or switching between real life and fake. this occurs in the lego movie when it switches to real life with real people.
